Distance Learning Specialist

The Administrative Office of the Courts, in Nashville, is seeking a dynamic self-motivated person for a newly formed position of Distance Learning Specialist within the Court Services Division.

Under the general supervision of the Court Services Director, and working closely with the AOC Audio Visual Technician and Webmaster staff, this position will identify customer education needs to plan, develop, prepare, execute and oversee synchronous and asynchronous web-based instruction that is interactive, engaging and rich in content for judges, clerks, court personnel and court system partners.


  • Knowledge of adult education instruction design and learning theory, and experience developing programming and curriculum for professional adult learners.
  • Working knowledge of a variety of web, multimedia or graphic design tools for online learning such as learning portals, hyperlinked pages, screen cam tutorials, streaming audio/video, threaded discussions, podcasts, chats, and desk-top video conferencing to create program content and interactive media.
  • Working knowledge of audio/visual equipment, personal computers, and software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with embedded videos and sound to be able to facilitate the creation and editing of online education.
  • Self-starter and able to engage and collaborate with subject matter experts as well as to be able to individually create engaging and effective online courses.
  • The successful applicant will be exposed to confidential information and must be able to understand the importance of being discreet.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license.
  • Must be able to travel (including overnight) as needed.
  • Must have an ability to lift and transfer up to 30 pounds.

Education and Experience:

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in one or more of the following areas (1) adult education (2) educational administration including development of instructional materials for online academic programs and consulting, planning and administering the programs (3) communications or educational technology.
  • Must have two to three years of professional experience of demonstrated creation of innovative and creative instructional experiences and/or design of focused e-learning experiences for adults.
  • Experience in delivering and facilitating professional development of faculty in the creation of online learning programs addressing course development and use of web-based technologies.
  • Additional graduate coursework in one or a combination of the following professional areas may substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of three years: any field related to the design or evaluation of curriculum and related instructional processes, including but not limited to Curriculum and Instruction, Education /Instructional Media Design, or Education Evaluation.
