Tennessee Supreme Court hears Oral Arguments at Girls State at Lipscomb

Lipscomb University served as host to the Tennessee Supreme Court today, June 1, 2017, American Legion Auxiliary’s Volunteer Girls State, a nationally recognized program providing high school female leaders in Tennessee the opportunity to experience and learn about civic engagement.

The Court heard two cases at the session on campus, as part of the Court's SCALES program (Supreme Court Advancing Legal Education for Students). The program participants received study materials to learn in-depth details about the cases.  Following oral arguments, the students participated in a Q&A session with the attorneys who argued the cases.

Since the creation of the program in 1995, the SCALES project has given more than 30,000 Tennessee students from more than 460 high schools the ability to see the judicial branch in action.

The Tennessee Supreme Court was recognized for its SCALES Project as the 2016 recipient of the Sandra Day O’Connor Award for the Advancement of Civics Education.
