In 2003, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Children’s Bureau, mandated an assessment of the juvenile courts particularly taking into account the requirements of the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997. The detailed findings and recommendations developed as a result of re-assessment are outlined in A Re-Assessment of Tennessee’s Judicial Process in Foster Care Cases.
The Safe and Timely Interstate Placement of Foster Children Act of 2006 required an assessment to evaluate the role, responsibilities and effectiveness of the courts in the interstate placement of foster children and to implement improvements to expedite these placements. The Assessment of Tennessee’s Interstate Placement of Foster Children was completed in June 2008.
