Indian Child Welfare Act in Tennessee Juvenile Practice

Event Description

In this session, presenters Susan Kovac, DCS Regional General Counsel, retired and Keller Mizell, DCS Senior Associate General Counsel, will discuss the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) and its application to Native American / Indian families living in Tennessee. ICWA provides minimum Federal standards for the removal of Indian children from their families and placement in foster and adoptive homes. Ms. Kovac brings significant expertise in Indian child welfare matters to her discussion of the historical context that led to Congress enacting ICWA, the statute’s key provisions, and summaries of recent ICWA decisions. Ms. Mizell will provide information about resources within DCS that judicial officers, attorneys, and court staff can use to support Indian families navigating dependency and neglect.
