Shelby County General Sessions Judge Deborah Means Henderson was honored with a Resolution, sponsored by Commissioner Erika Sugarmon, at the February 5 Shelby County Commission Meeting.
Commissioner Sugarmon read the Resolution, which reads: Whereas Judge Henderson is an active member of Delta Sigma Delta Sorority, the National Council of Negro Women and Greater Middle Baptist Church. Most recently Judge Henderson was sworn in as a president of the Tennessee General Sessions Judges Conference, becoming the first African American woman elected president of any Tennessee Judicial Conference. She is also serving as counselor, vice president of the ADRN of the court in Shelby County. She is a proud mother of Tamara and a proud grandmother of Taralyn. Again, it is an honor to bestow upon you this resolution honoring all of your work.
“I want to, again, thank you for all your work, especially with the unhoused and the court you are trying to establish,” said Commissioner Sugarmon.
Shelby County has over 27,000 evictions every year, many overseen by Judge Henderson. Recently, Judge Henderson has been working with the County Commission to establish a pre-litigation eviction mediation program to work through disputes between landlords and tenants.
“Thank you, Commissioner Sugarmon, and thank you to all of the other commissioners,” said Judge Henderson. “I do appreciate you honoring me, taking this moment today. I am working very diligently, not just to stop with the things that have already been accomplished, but to continue working for the citizens of Shelby County.”
