The Tennessee Judicial Conference Foundation has announced the establishment of a new scholarship for law school students at the University of Tennessee College of Law. The $1,000 legacy scholarship is funded by former Supreme Court Justice Penny White, who now serves as a law professor at the University of Tennessee.
The first White Scholarship will be awarded to a University of Tennessee law student in Fall 2011. The scholarship will be awarded through the University’s established scholarship application and review process.
“We commend Professor White for investing in the legal education of deserving law students,” said former Circuit Court Judge Steve Daniel, who serves as president of the Tennessee Judicial Conference Foundation. “Professor White serves as a shining example of the judges and former judges who are committed to helping people pursue a legal career.”
White first served on the bench as a Circuit Court Judge in the 1st Judicial District, which includes Carter, Johnson, Unicoi and Washington counties. She was appointed to the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals and then to the Tennessee Supreme Court before beginning her teaching career at the University of Tennessee College of Law.
The Tennessee Judicial Conference Foundation was established in 1995 as a non-profit foundation to award need-based scholarships for students at each of the colleges of law within the state. The Foundation is funded largely through gifts and pledges from current and former members of the Tennessee judiciary.
