Circuit Court Judge John J. Maddux, Jr. was awarded the Justice Frank F. Drowota III award for Outstanding Judicial Service during the Tennessee Bar Association's annual convention in Chattanooga earlier this month.
The Outstanding Judicial Service award was established to recognize a judge or a judicial branch official of a federal, state or local court in Tennessee who demonstrates extraordinary devotion and dedication to the improvement of the law, the legal system and the administration of justice. Maddux is the sixth recipient of this annual award.
Since 1984, Maddux has served as a circuit court judge in the 13th Judicial District which includes Clay, Cumberland, DeKalb, Overton, Pickett, Putnam and White counties. He has served as president of the Tennessee Judicial Conference and Tennessee Trial Judges Association. In 2010, he was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Judicial Conference Foundation.
For the past 32 years, Maddux has served as State Chairman of the Tennessee American Legion Boys State program which is rated the number one such program in the nation. In this role, he has been instrumental in bringing the Supreme Court's oral arguments to Boys State for the past 10 years.
