Capital Case Attorney

The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) is seeking a qualified person for the position of Capital Case Attorney. The successful applicant must be an attorney licensed to practice law in Tennessee and demonstrate effective legal research, writing, and verbal communication skills, with particular emphasis on criminal law and knowledge of death penalty litigation.

The successful candidate will be one of two attorneys working under the supervision of the AOC’s General Counsel and the trial court judge(s) presiding over capital cases. The Capital Case Attorney assists those trial judges and court staff before and during capital murder trials, in capital post-conviction cases, and in other capital case collateral matters. The attorney reads motions and briefs, identifies and researches legal issues, prepares legal memoranda and reports, and drafts orders and jury instructions as requested. The position requires statewide travel to attend motions hearings, trials, conferences, and meetings.

The selected candidate will work remotely except for when the attorney appears in court. This position will work mostly in Middle and West Tennessee, but as stated above statewide travel can be expected.

Qualifications/Experience: The successful applicant must be an attorney licensed to practice in Tennessee with at least three (3) years legal experience. Experience in criminal law, knowledge of the Tennessee Court System, and knowledge of death penalty litigation are highly preferred. Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, attention to detail and accuracy, and time management and organizational skills are required.
