Family members said former Chancellor Irvin H. Kilcrease, Jr. passed away Monday night.

Judge Kilcrease became the first African-American to preside over a Tennessee Chancery Court after then-Governor Lamar Alexander appointed him a Davidson County chancellor in 1980.

He was among the first African-American graduates at Nashville School of Law, after applying unsuccessfully twice before being accepted in 1962.

He won numerous elections, and was almost always unchallenged.
