State Court Justices from across the nation recently visited Nashville. The State Justice Institute (SJI) held their board meeting in Nashville, and attendees met at the Old Supreme Court Chambers at the Tennessee Capitol Building, toured the Capitol and the Tennessee Supreme Court building.
State Justices from several states, including Connecticut, Utah, Kentucky, Oregon, New York, Florida attended, and were greeted by Governor Bill Haslam and Secretary of State Tre Hargett. At the event, Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Bivins highlighted the nationally recognized initiatives in Tennessee, such as Access for Justice, and the Court's SCALES Program, which provides curriculum to teachers about the court system as well as the specific cases the Court will hear. More than 33,000 young people in Tennessee have benefited from the SCALES program, and it received the national Sandra Day O'Connor Award. The Administrative Office of the Courts also made presentations regarding specific Human Trafficking initiatives Tennessee has accomplished through the help of grants provided by SJI.
