Circuit Court Judge Philip E. Smith was honored by the Women’s Political Collaborative of Tennessee as one of four men to receive the 2015 Good Guys Award. The Good Guys Award is awarded annually by the Women’s Political Collaborative to honor men in the community who have worked to engage women in the political process and community leadership. Judge Smith was introduced by Circuit Court Special Master Stephanie Williams and was presented the award by Jim Schulman.
Judge Smith was recognized for his contributions toward combating and preventing domestic violence.
“Judge Smith challenged the system in the area of domestic violence which paved the road for a close and honest examination of the problems the city of Nashville faced in preventing domestic violence and protecting victims of domestic violence,” Diane Lance, Special Counsel to Mayor Karl Dean said.
Judge Smith began his legal career in 1988 after graduating from the University of Tennessee College of Law. As an attorney, he was listed in “Best Lawyers in America” as well as “Mid-South Super Lawyers” and is a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Judge Smith was, at the time of his appointment, board-certified as a Family Law Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
Judge Smith was appointed Judge of the Fourth Circuit Court of Davidson County by Governor Phil Bredesen in 2009. Judge Smith was elected in 2014 to an eight-year term.
The other recipients of the Good Guys Award were Rashed Fakhruddin, Joey Thomas Hatch, and Senator Doug Overbey.
