Retired 16th Judicial District Circuit Court Judge and military veteran Royce Taylor was the keynote speaker Friday at a ceremony in Rutherford County in remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Judge Taylor served the State of Tennessee as a judge from 1998 to 2020. During the Vietnam War, Lieutenant Taylor commanded the Quebec Platoon of Navy SEAL Team 1. All of the men under his command survived. He received a Bronze Star with a Combat V for his service. Judge Taylor retired in 1995 from the United States Navy Reserve with the rank of Captain.
Judge Taylor spoke at the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office’s 9/11 Memorial, in front of a monument constructed from a beam out of the World Trade Center’s North tower.
He reflected on the sacrifice that so many made in an effort to save lives exactly 19 years ago.
“That day our first responders, law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians met the ultimate test,” he said. “We honor those who gave their lives in responding to the disaster on Sept. 11, 2001. This memorial is a reminder of their sacrifice.”
He also emphasized how important it is to recognize the ongoing work of first responders who respond to difficult situations in the present.
“We also honor those who continue to take daily risks in performing their duties as they protect and serve,” he said. “Any day can come with unknown dangerous encounters. This memorial continues to remind us of the sacrifices made daily by the people who volunteer to respond to emergencies, violent encounters, and unforeseeable situations.”
