The Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) of Memphis will honor Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Holly Kirby with the Marion Griffin-Frances Loring Award this week at their annual banquet. The award goes to one who has exhibited outstanding achievement in the legal profession.
Justice Kirby was appointed by Gov. Bill Haslam to join the Tennessee Supreme Court in 2014 after she served nearly 19 years as the first woman on the Tennessee Court of Appeals. Justice Kirby was born in Memphis and graduated from high school in Columbia, Tenn. As an undergraduate at the University of Memphis, she was a Herff Honors Scholar and held a number of student leadership positions. She graduated in 1979, magna cum laude, with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. She went on to attend the University of Memphis School of Law on a Herff Honors Scholarship and served on the editorial board of the Law Review. In 1982, she received her J.D. with high honors, graduating third in her class of 140 students.
Also during the AWA’s banquet, the group will award scholarships to students from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. In addition, Justice Kirby will induct the 2015 AWA board officers and committee chairs.
The award ceremony will start with a silent auction and cocktail reception on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. Dinner and the program will follow, starting at 6:45 p.m. The evening’s events are at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn, 3700 Central Ave., Memphis. Tickets are $60 for AWA members, $70 for nonmembers, and $40 for law students.
